Well hello again from Casey.
This weeks adventures started out with a beautiful week of weather since you
all last heard, the exception being, the big blizz that MET haven't been
able to find as yet. This weeks round of jollies started with Jack's being
invaded by Bignose, Anthony and Daniela. Wilkes had its turn with the long
awaited much talked about Guinness jolly attended by Sharon, Alby, George,
Steve, Annette, Chris, Fester and Willem the bird man from Ardery
Island.
A great night was had
by all with Willem enjoying some "civilisation" and
Guinness, away from all the hard work at Ardery.
Reinforcements arrived on Sunday in the Hagglund's battle wagons containing
Sharon and Jane (again!), Christina to monitor the incoming blizz, Swiv to
conduct the blizz dance in the vain hope of getting stuck there, and finally
Psycho and Buic to drag George home and back to work. Rumour has it that the
TV, Video come theatre set up turned into a scene from "Driving Miss Daisy"
with the kids in the back seat as well.
With not much time for anything else a couple of re supply trips to Ardery Island were squeezed in with both IRB's stacked to the gunnels. This saw Mark off loaded on Ardery for a short stint while Willem managed to stow away on the return voyage to Casey. Meanwhile back at Casey the remaining crew was being entertained by one of Swiv's famed Pizza nights followed by a showing of Forrest Gump in the Odeon.
Last week Craigels and Psycho enjoyed back to back birthdays with everybody else enjoying back to back hangovers.
Swiv's last minute efforts on "oh who's birthday is it" birthday cakes, has seen some very creative cakes. Unfortunately its rumoured that they've been the same cakes renamed. On the work side of things its been all go with Gazza(Liquid Nails) organising the RTA and helping out Mick with the removal of all the old outside living vans. Rumour has that all the vegies in the hydroponics are running scared after Mick decided to change a few light globes with the 950. Sunday saw a trip back down memory lane with Gazza, Chris, Alby, Mick, Brooksy, Trevor, Glenn, Frank, Swiv and Buic getting together to re-erect the Casey sign at the lower fuel farm.
All went well except for the argument over how Casey should be spelt. Gazza still denies any knowledge of being responsible for its first erection during the 90/91 summer, when it lasted one week and was blown down but gave plenty of advise on how it should have been done. Fester (bitten by big eye again) has been screaming along this week with his year book committee preparing photos, personal profiles, work reports and station history. Buic and Alby staged a huge parking demonstration, that managed to block out the redshed, by getting all their toys out for one big photo shoot for the year book.
The ploombers have been busy flushing and cleaning out the water tanks ensuring a crystal clear water supply, and hopefully spa's, for all. Talking of spa's for all, Buic decided to have one standing near a puddle while Alby drove past in a ute. All that could be heard after was a roar of laughter from the exiting ute and "I'm going to clean the BBQ with your monthly report" from Buic. Rob T has been handballed the job of face-lifting the old Dieso's workshop.
Unfortunately the buildings rusting faster than he can put the patches on. Steve's taken over as the newly commissioned fat fingered electrician after toying with the workshop fire alarm, much to the disgust of Alby. Steve and Trev seem to have come down with an unknown illness which causes them to end up on their backs underneath the autoclave. Attila's been busy redesigning, removing, repairing, revamping, reprogramming and rearranging the station.
This week saw him redesignated as slushy, have fun Swiv! History was made with the first all female traverse to S2. The rest of the station took the well earned break and enjoyed the girls thoughtful gesture of the cheese's and wines left behind. Rob Wyatt Earp Easther, what a mouth full!, has had both guns blazing as its been coming at him from all directions. We're not sure if he needs more ammunition or a D1 to clean up the mess!
Well that's about it from the Gold Coast, catch ya later.
George Alby Buic
Dear Caseyites.
Start of the week saw the rescue of the tray Hagg that had been left there
after having problems on the previous week's Law Dome trip. Jason, Chris Y,
Bruce#2 and Ian#2 went up in the Nodwell and towed the Hagg back 75kms for
repairs (anything for a jolly guys).
Friday drinks and Bruce#1 and Terry threw caution to the wind and opened, to all comers, the door of the Temple of Happiness (the brew room!). It was a week of festivities as the summer contingent packed up and made ready for flyoff. Our chef Gerbil had one last dance with a sheep from his personal harem before spit roasting her up for a magnificent feast. Saturday night was TROPICAL NIGHT at the dieso's workshop with drinks (yes more stout!) around the Refinery Bar. New records for 100m sprints were made as people in only shorts, garish shirts and thongs braved minus 15 degrees to make it to the party. Ian#1 actually did not realise that it was a tropical night but strangely his shirts fitted in perfectly. Ole treated us to a slide show of his epic canoe trip along the Queensland coast to Cape York. The local stout seems to have very definite side effects, not the least of which is complete loss of memory for any who drink it, making it very difficult to actually say anything further about the Tropical Nights proceedings. Through the haze of clouded recollections come reports of Dick dancing with a tree while Brad seems to have got the hydroponics working well managing to cultivate a complete branch in a location that the sun never sees. The moon was full that night, in fact there were many moons, all a little different in their own special way. Cath's foolishly unattended camera was there to capture every one of them.
Drama this week as the SAR team swung into action with a response time that makes a Galapagos Tortoise seem like a 100 metre sprint champ. Brad and Dinger died in the incident but they got better - tough those navy guys. Talking to the dead men later they said that the rescuers acquitted themselves well.
Tuesday night
was a formal dinner to say "hasta la vista" to the Summerers. As usual the
food was a credit to our hard working chef, the wine flowed freely and
heartwarming speeches were made by just about everyone. Bruce#1 showed
skills gained from a previous winter by taking out the Darts comp. Martine
bravely held off NO challengers to win the Pool comp. The hard fought chess
comp continues ... and emotional moments as Cath was admitted to that
normally male dominated bastion, the BREW COMMITTEE - good to see that we
are all equals down here!
The gender balance moved in the right direction with the addition of two new (and might I say stunning - ed) females. Jo-anne and Simone stunned all with their elegance, charm, sophistication and facial hair. Strangely absent from the evening were Jonny and Simon. The dance floor was packed as eager men clambered to dance with the new girls in town.
And while on the topic of appearance changes and hair, we witnessed some amazing events during this week. Jeroen had his beard shaved off, with a no.1 haircut. Anthony got rid of his beard too (Anthony, you are wintering you know!), and our medical officer Janet had a zero haircut to make her Russian shapka fit better - Janet you are going to need to keep it on all the time!!
The big "pack up" is in full swing with the Green Store (and Brendan) being overrun with all manner of goods. With reports of 15 metre seas on the Aurora Australis, Janet will no doubt see a rush on sea sick tablets in the next couple of days. Maybe this is why Ole decided to opt for the winter?
Finally, from the departing Summerers we would like to wish all the intrepid people remaining at Casey a happy and successful winter.
Best wishes from all of us at Casey.
